Yosef Govrin (Gurvitz) was born in Cernauti (Northern Bucovina), he was born in Edineti (Bessarabia). He was 10 years old when German and Romanian troops occupied these areas at the beginning of July 1941. He and his parents managed to save themselves after the Romanian troops massacred thousands of Jews to occupy the village but were deported together with all the Jews who survived the massacre, to Transnistria. His father was murdered on the road by the Romans. Yosef and his mother came to the ghetto in Moghilev, the first and last stage of the ordeal lived in Transnistria. Here they suffer from permanent hunger, suffering from the danger of triggering the actions, epidemics and brutality of the Romanian authorities. In March 1944, they were released from the Red Army. They returned to Edineti, Cernauti. They crossed the border to Romania, Yugoslavia and from there they sailed on a ship to Eretz Israel, with illegal immigrants. They were detained by the British fleet and transported to Cyprus. Yosef and his mother will be released at the end of 1947.
