The novel by the famous Kazakh writer Gabit Musrepov is based on historical realities that took place in the Kazakh steppes in the 19th century. The main character, Yesenei, was a cunning ruler who controlled an entire clan, a noble rich man, and in his youth - a warrior and spearman. Two of his children died of smallpox on the same day. Yesenei, a tall man of about fifty and a noble man who dreams of a child, falls in love with Ulpan, who is forty years younger than him, and takes her as his wife for the second time. In about ten to fifteen years, Ulpan Duyim will become a wise mother who will rule the country. The novel realistically depicts the life and customs of the Kazakh aul over hundreds of years, including the taking of hostages, the issuance of dowries, land disputes between the rich and the poor, between people and disputes between widows.
