The monograph, based on the generalization of new archival sources, critical comprehension of the achievements of historical literature, highlights the national idea in the program documents of Ukrainian and Polish political parties, their desire to implement it, the struggle of Ukrainian politicians for a new election law and the opening of a Ukrainian university in Lviv. The anti-Ukrainian policy of the Polish administrative authorities and the Austrian military in the region at the beginning of the so-called war was clarified. "Ukrainian betrayal", emphasized the mass repression of Ukrainians, the hypocrisy of the Austrian government to Ukrainian claims to the division of Galicia into eastern and western parts and the formation of a separate Ukrainian crown land, its desire to resolve the Polish question in the spirit of Austro-Polish solution. Emphasis is placed on the intensification of the Polish-Ukrainian confrontation after the proclamation of the Polish state by the Central Powers and the secession of Galicia. The preparation and seizure of power by Ukrainians in Galicia and Bukovina in November 1918, claims of Poles about the affiliation of these lands to Poland, which led to an armed struggle between Ukrainians and Poles, especially fierce in the 40s of the XX century.
