Instead of Vynnychenko's "reading of Ukrainian history with bromine", the authors of this work, in order to better understand the lessons learned and possible prospects for statehood, propose to read the modern history of Ukraine "with a pencil". Accordingly, the period of independence is shown in the historical retrospective of the last hundred years - the First World War, the liberation
competitions, the evolution of the political status of the USSR, the development of state discourse in the works of Ukrainian intellectuals. Domestic political and socio-economic processes after 1990 are shown everywhere through the prism of the confrontation with Russia, first in the diplomatic, economic, energy, humanitarian spheres, and since the beginning of the armed aggression - in the security sphere.
The research organically combines concrete-historical presentation with the consideration of problematic topics related to intellectual history and the history of socio-political thought.
