A narration of the author's personal encounters with two prominent figures in our recent history, who embody two opposing forms of Slovak destiny. He knew of Spitzer's Jewish fate from his birthplace as he grew up near a labor camp for Jews in Novaky. After the return of Alexander Mach from prison in 1968, Spitzer conducted a dialogue with him about his share in the tragic fate of Slovak Jews during the Slovak state. He suggested to Balaz, then a student of journalism, to write a diploma thesis about Mach's journalistic work. From their first meeting at the University Library in April 1969 until their interruption by the State Security in the mid-1970s, the book tells the story of interviews in which the author had the opportunity to get acquainted not only with Mach's journalism, controversy and friendship with leading communist intellectuals. Clementis, "first hand" to know and record Mach's view of the whole set of Slovak and German politicians, especially Tuka and Hitler, and to witness his reflections on the circumstances and at what price the Slovak state was created and existed.
