The results of many years of research on the problem of tritium contamination of natural water environments in the Ural region, the Siberian Federal District (Krasnoyarsk Territory, Republic of Yakutia-Sakha), and the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (Republic of Kazakhstan) are summarized.
Data are presented on above-background tritium contamination of various natural objects and environments affected by nuclear enterprises, in comparison with control territories. The pollution of reservoirs, rivers, swamps, rainfall, snowfall, sources of drinking water supply, biological objects (aquatic and terrestrial plants, fish) and human urine is considered.
Based on full-scale and model experiments, the potential harm to public health when exposed to tritium-contaminated air, water, and food is assessed.
