Small towns (in Polish "miasteczko", in Yiddish "shtetl") can be considered as a sociocultural phenomenon of Eastern Europe. Jews were the majority in the popilation of the shtetls, especially in Poland, Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine. Soviet politics towards national minorities, every day life of the Jewish shtetl, changes in public, social, cultural life of the population. The edition is a translation from the English PhD research paper presented in the History Institute of the Belostok University.
