The book presents both older and newer data on Panerius collected mainly by non-destructive research methods. During the war, Lithuanians, mostly Jews and Soviet soldiers, were massacred here. During the period 1941–1944, the territory of the Paneriai “base” became a rationally thought-out, constantly improved place for massacres. Sensing the impending defeat, the Nazis and their collaborators made great efforts to hide the traces of the crime. Whether the team of authors examines changes in the “base” area or terrain, whether it is a search for a killing pit or the location of an escape tunnel, the material presented to readers reveals that traces of the tragedy in Paneriai have survived to the present day.
