The collection of essays tells about six Ukrainian towns five of which joined the Russian Empire after two divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the end of the XVIIIth century. In the XIXth century were inhabited by many Jews. Deep changes in social, political and spiritual life of the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIXth century made Jews think about their place in the society.
