Writer, painter, draftsman, doctor of philosophy and creator of the Moomin characters Tove Marika Jansson was born on August 9, 1914 in Helsinki into a family of artists. His father was the sculptor Viktor Jansson and his mother was the draftsman Signe Hammarsten. Tove Jansson studied at Stockholm's Academy of Arts, the Finnish Art Association's drawing school at Ateneum and Ecole d'Adrien Holy in Paris. His public career began with drawings in the satirical magazine Garmni in 1929. He became internationally known for his story books (from 1945) and his cartoons, whose imaginative and humorous character gallery is the main character of the benevolent Moomin. With her brother Lars Jansson, Tove Jansson wrote and drew the Moomin cartoon for 21 years. The Moomin cartoon appeared in more than 40 countries between 1954 and 1975. Tove Jansson's books have been translated into dozens of languages and numerous theater, opera, film, TV and radio adaptations have been made of them. In 1968, Tove Jansson's memoir Bildhuggarens's dotter, Finnished Kuvanveistäjän tytär 1969, was published. Tove Jansson died in Helsinki on June 27, 2001 at the age of 86.
