Russia has been an important and difficult problem for Poland. In his book “To the East from the West” Jerzy Pomianowski shows that it is not love, but mutual respect that is the basis of human relationships. For many years he has insisted on setting up a dialogue between Poland and Russia. The author has many friends among Russian intellectuals. He translated works by A.Pushkin, I.Babel, A.Solzhenitsin, M.Bulgakov, A.Akhmatova, J.Mandelstam and others. He also initiated publication of the “New Poland” journal. Pomianowski’s activities are connected with the West knowledge: for many years he has lectures at Italian universities. That helps him to consider the Polish-Russian relations in a general European, and not local, context.
