A complex of issues is examined in the book, connected with the linguistic and cultural definition of the term “Russianness”: its stratum character, different range in elitist and folk cultures, and the problem of intra-ethnic cultures. Special attention is paid to the presentation of the term “Russianness” in two most famous works by V.I.Dal, an outstanding Russian amateur lexicographer, – “Proverbs of Russian People” and “Explanatory Dictionary of the Live Great Russian Language”.
