The book acquaints its readers with a carved wooden marquee, Ivan IV’s praying place, or Monomakhov’s throne as it is used to be called sometimes. It was created in 1551 and was used by all the Russian sovereigns from that time on. The author tells us about a tradition with Byzantine roots to arrange special praying places for the autocrats. And he also speaks about the conceptions connected with the idea of a special place for praying. The book provides a possibility to learn the inscriptions on the throne, bas-reliefs, decorating its sides and a rich décor of the structure, which is not only a fine example of the Russian craftsmen’s art, but also an important historical monument. The book includes short stories about the historical figures mentioned in it.
The edition contains a large number of illustrations.
