The collective monograph is dedicated to understanding the place and the role of a screen in modern culture. Today, lectures, conferences, film festivals, theater productions and other cultural events are presented to the audience on various screens from cinema screens to portable gadgets around the world. The challenges of 2020 due to COVID-19 Pandemic contributed further to the fact that a screen has become the main mediator between a person and the outside world, between a viewer and a work of art.
The research explores a problem of the status of a screen, which is no longer a privileged carrier of the cinematic image, but is becoming a kind of universal way of constructing artistic, cultural, political and social reality. The authors of the monograph are participants of the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference «The World Through a Screen: The polymediality of Contemporary Art», held as part of the 17th International Festival-Workshop of Film Schools Kinoproba (December 3, 2020) with the support of the Department of History of Philosophy, Philosophical Anthropology, Aesthetics and Theory of Culture of Ural Federal University. The monograph combined the research of young and mature scientists from Ekaterinburg, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sofia, Vilnius, as well as cases presented during master classes by practitioners of audiovisual arts from Russia and Poland. The monograph distinguishes 2 main vectors: the study of a screen in traditional media: cinema, theater and the new types of screens: video art, computer games, Instagram.
