The history of Latvian entrepreneurship, nor the history of bookselling, cannot be written without mentioning the publisher Helmars Rudzitis (1903-2001). He possessed not only what is called a business savvy, but also a good sense and foresight combined with an understanding of the values of literature, music and culture. As a man with entrepreneurial talent and excellent knowledge, a bright personality, Rudzitis enjoyed the respect and recognition of people throughout his life. In 2026, it will be 100 years since Helmars Rudzitis founded the publishing house “Gramatu Draugs” in Riga, which rapidly and significantly changed the bookselling process and the book market in the early years of independent Latvia.
