The World Cup is the most important sporting event on the planet, and football has long since become a metaphor for life. Our world is perfectly reflected in this sport - society, people, customs, desires, nostalgia, past and future trends. In 90 minutes of a football game, tragedies and comedies, epic victories and similar defeats take place, in which the majority of humanity participates as spectators and commentators. Miljenko Jergovic follows the World Championships from the first one he actively remembers when he watched the Weltmeisterschatf on TV in 1974 in Germany as an eight-year-old, to the last one, which took place at the strange end of 2022 in Qatar. For 24 hours, he recorded what was happening in and around Qatar every day, but it was always a possibility to go into the distant past and to analyze our present. In about thirty short texts, the history of the moment unfolds before us, as well as the history of football. Jergovic is a perfect observer, he watched every match in Qatar, noted magnificent moves, but also seemingly unimportant details that show why football is a metaphor for the world. The wisdom of defeat, the folly of victory is a book about all of us, about the moment we live in, about a game that has become larger than life.
