On the basis of rich archival material the author reconstructs the mechanism and results of suppression of freedom of speech in book publishing, book selling and library business, as well as in literature and arts. Special attention is drawn to censorship imposed by the KGB on emigrant literature and that of Leningrad underground in the 1950-1980s.
