The cornerstone of the foundation of the national army of the modern era was laid by the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USR), whose combat activity is one of the brightest pages of the armed struggle of the Ukrainian people during the Liberation Struggle of 1914–1923. Formed on the wave of the patriotic upsurge of the Ukrainian Halych youth on the eve of the First World War, the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen became the first national armed formation after a long - more than two hundred year - break in the history of Ukrainian militarism.
