The work is a successful attempt to summarize and survey material on the history of a unique subpolar census undertaken in 1926-27 on the territory of the present-day Krasnoyarsk Krai and Irkutsk Oblast. The authors trace peculiarities of the census operation, personal contribution of its participants, and provide an insight into social structure, cultural and economic achievements of the northerners. Apart from plentiful research data, the census participants left a collection of curious photos and drawings, which reflect the appearance and way of life of the subpolar population (including photos of subpolar shamans).
