The evolution of legal status of Udmurtia is traced from the moment of its joining with Russia (the mid-XVIth century) to the end of the XXth century, in particular, legal aspects of the Russian and Soviet federalism and autonomism, movements for zemstvo government, and legislative acts for legal regulation of relations between the central and local governmental bodies.
