The book was based on documentary sources, a significant part of which, which is especially valuable, was put into scientific circulation for the first time. In particular, these are census and scribe books, revision tales of peasants of volosts of the Totem district of the 17th-18th centuries. from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts, clerical and confessional sheets of churches of the 19th century Totem County, from the State Archives of the Vologda Region, paperwork of the Totem County Committee of the RCP (b) of the Vologda Province of the first years of Soviet power, stored in the Vologda Regional Archive of Recent Political History. The scribe books of the Totem district 1622–1625 were also involved in the study.
