The book examines the rights of Bulgarians related to employment, social security and social assistance. Employment-related rights include the right to work, the right to health and safety at work, the right to remuneration, the right to leave of absence, the right to trade union membership, the right to strike and the right to legal defense. The book starts with an overview of the emergence and recognition of social rights and their international protection. In Bulgaria, they are enshrined in the 1991 Constitution and many social laws. The author concludes that despite the great number of relevant laws, the social rights of the Bulgarian citizens are seriously undermined by widespread poverty and fail to ensure decent standards of living and safety.
