The so-called Canon of Methodius in honour of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica was probably written in the second half of the 9th century and has been preserved in a number of copies from the 11th-14th centuries, exceptionally from the 15th century. The monument arouses intense interest especially because its content is connected with the Byzantine mission in Great Moravia and its struggle against the trilingualists. The Canon has been the subject of numerous studies and monographs by eminent Slavists of the present and the past, yet a number of fundamental issues related to it remain open. The present monograph focuses primarily on the interpretation of the disputed points of the canon, as well as on the questions of authorship, dating, and the circumstances of its creation. The book treats relevant textual and contextual information that puts a number of fundamental literary-historical and textual-historical problems in a new light. It also includes a critical and reader-friendly translation of the canon that makes its contents accessible to a wider audience.
