The Smolensk battle became an important landmark in the history of the Great Patriotic War. For the first time from the beginning of the war actions the Red Army managed to fight the invincible before German Weimarmacht. Defending their Motherland Russian commanders and soldiers fought for Smolensk, freed Yelnya, wrecking the German plans of unceasing attack on Moscow. As a result the group of German armies “Center” took great bashing, had to pass to the defense and to postpone the further attack on the capital of the USSR. This book narrates about the course of the Smolensk battle, which took place from the 10th of July till the 10th of September of 1941. The text material is based on the documents and photo materials.
