The Thracians gave the world Orpheus, Spartacus, Aesop and, in a broader sense, Constantine the Great and Justinian the Great, among other important personalities. In addition to their proverbial vocal prowess, great wisdom, amazing courage and remarkable physical strength, the Thracians also had another talent. They were able to rise from the ashes of destruction and rebuild their society from scratch. The Thracian language is still alive today and resonates across Bulgaria. It has evolved, of course, but is still recognizable. Piecing together the mosaic of Thracian proper names, we realize that the Bulgarian language began to take shape 6,000 years before the establishment of the Bulgarian state in 681 AD.
