A novel by Bulgarian dissident writer Georgi Markov (1929-1978). It describes a real-life tragedy that occurred in the 1960s. Banned by the communist authorities, the novel was not published until 2007. It is not surprising that a book which predicts the inevitable collapse of the totalitarian world was not allowed to reach readers during the communist era. By the beginning of the 1960s the weed of totalitarianism had completely subdued the colors of democracy, Soviet imperialism had crushed the national spirit, and repression had killed every sprout of conscience. But Markov had the courage to proclaim that writers and other intellectuals can, and should, change history.
