Cold War was not an abstract concept, it had its own displays and its protagonists. Its actors played cards of varying heights, depending on the meaning of the landscape. Aces, kings and pawns. The highest cards were held by the Americans and the Soviets, even though players from those who existed earlier as regional democratic politicians or local dictators from time to time drew the ace.
