Little has been written about the tsaritsas, or queens, of medieval Bulgarian history. This is due mainly to the limited amount of relevant historical records bequeathed to us by what was a patriarchal society - a society in which the wives, sisters and daughters of the monarchs played a subsidiary, supplementary role. It is worthwhile, however, to dig for the truth about the virtually unknown Bulgarian queens, not only because we owe it to them but also because it will provide a different perspective on history. The present book proves that most of the consorts of the medieval Bulgarian kings were remarkable women, highly learned and absolutely equal to their honorable husbands in playing the complex diplomatic games at the time.
