This is the real-life story of Major Manol Gochev, a Bulgarian Army officer who was held prisoner of war on Corsica Island in the Mediterranean Sea during World War I. After a miraculous escape from death in the 1916 Chegan offensive, a.k.a. the Battle of Lerin, Gochev was taken prisoner by Serbian soldiers and was handed over to the French. Having spent some time in jail in Avignon and Marseille, he was finally taken to the Citadel of Corte on Corsica Island. There, he was treated cruelly by the French prison authorities, which made him lose his faith in the humaneness of "civilized nations". Gochev's trials continued after his return to Bulgaria, where former P.O.W.s were received with contempt.
