The book includes a series of three historical novels in which Bulgarian author Gencho Stoev explores the relationship between history and the individual. The first of them, "The Price of Gold" (1965), is about the defense and the fall of Perushtitsa during the 1876 April Uprising against Ottoman Turkish Rule. Its sequel, "Coming Back" (1976), is set in the period after Bulgaria's liberation in 1878, when the ideals of the National Revival were crushed. The narrative about the Hadzhivranev family sheds light on the moral and psychological motivation of the struggle for freedom and the subsequent crisis of values. The third novel, "The Files", describes the fate of the Hadzhivranev family during the anti-Fascist resistance and after the communist takeover of 1944.
