One of the major themes of the booklet is the peoples who inhabited the region in the early Middle Ages. Those were the Finno-Ugric tribes (mainly – the Ests), the Baltic tribes (mainly – the Latgals), the Slavonic Krivichi tribe and those who came from Scandinavia and Southern Russia and also played a significant role in the formation of local culture. Much attention is paid to the economic occupations of the inhabitants of the land. The stories tell about agriculture, fishing, hunting, military occupations, trade and communication routes in the region. The booklet tells about the era of paganism in the region, about the most impressive archaeological sites associated with the pagan times. The finds, telling about Christianization of the population of the Velikaya river basin and the Lake Peipsi coast which began at the end of the Xth – the Ist half of the XIth centuries, are also discussed. The booklet ends with the subject about multiethnicity of early medieval Pskov, the city, which has preserved numerous archaeological sites left by the representatives of the main peoples inhabiting the region who have lived here more than a thousand years.
