The book examines the formation of the ethnolocalization of the modern peoples of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic — the Karachays, Circassians, Abazins, and Nogais — during their incorporation into the Russian Empire. The focus is on the Russian factor in the external and internal mass migrations that shaped the ethnic and administrative boundaries in the south of the Russian Empire. The study is based on archival materials, many of which are introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time, and on an extensive body of literature on the Caucasus.
