The author shows high cultural significance of the phenomenon of the Russian peasant house, and conducts a close culturological study of its image in the XIXth and early XXth centuries, determining its role in the sociocultural space of the Russian North. The peasant house is also viewed upon as the space of human existence with the evolution of its types and architectural peculiarities, which are reflected in the textual and visual material of the Pinega, Onega, Northern Dvina, Pomorye and the Povazhye.
