The original materials of the 1986-1989 field research of the “Paleothnographic Expedition” led by the renowned ethnographer, Dr. S. Badamkhatang, a phenomenon in Mongolian archaeology and anthropology in the late 20th century, are being published for the first time. The expedition, which began its field research in 1986, explored the Great Khentii and Small Khentii Mountains, the Kherlen, Onon, and Tuul river basins, discovered dozens of new archaeological sites, excavated and studied medieval Mongolian burial grounds, and recorded local place names one by one, comparing them with previous scholars’ studies of historical place names recorded in the Mongolian Secret Archives, creating a wealth of original materials for research that will clarify the local features of ancient Mongolian aimags.
