The book compares various theories and data in an attempt to reveal the truth about the old Bulgarian calendar, the Nominalia of the Bulgarian Rulers, and the bronze rosette from the medieval Bulgarian capital Pliska. The authors speculate that the old Bulgarian calendar may have been a simplified version of the Chinese calendar with its 12-year cycles, and the Bulgarians probably learned about it from the Avars. The book further suggests there is no connection between Avitohol, the first name in the Nominalia, and Attila, the ruler of the Huns. As for the Pliska rosette, the authors theorize that it may have been an astrological object of divination better known as the Key of Solomon. In this book, readers will find the most in-depth Bulgarian study on the emergence and the nature of the animal sign calendar based on the 12-year cycle. The authors don't claim to have the definitive answers to the questions discussed, but their theories, partly based on non-Bulgarian sources, are an important step forward.
