The sacred is one of most general, polysemantic and profound categories of culture. As foundation of religious experiences, rites and institutions, the sacred persists in modern culture, competing with the rational thought and making the latter attentively scrutinize its opponent. In 20th century, the sacred has undergone "secularization": not only theology, but also philosophy, sociology, anthropology, contemporary art and literature are occupied now with its exploration. In such situation, an intellectual history of the sacred is required, i.e. an interdisciplinary history of its conceptualizations: that is the object of this book. Its analyzes concern social scientists as Emile Durkheim, Marcel Mauss, Rudolph Otto, Mary Douglas, Yury Lotman, thinkers and writers as Joseph de Maistre, Mircea Eliade, Georges Bataille, Roger Caillois, Jean-Paul Sartre and many others.
