The present study critically analyzes the theoretical frameworks of group identity in its ethnic, national and, as far as possible, supranational forms. It applies empirical sociological methods to research the identity of young Bulgarians. Based on an interdisciplinary approach and a combination of theoretical and practical research, it searches for the type of Bulgarian national identity at the beginning of the current century, revealing its main characteristics. It detects and determines the trends in its transformation and predicts the parameters of its future development. It focuses on the identity of Bulgarian youth as the part of society that holds the potential for societal transformation in the coming decades.
