The mountainous regions of Bulgaria are not a demographic desert where poverty and despair reign. Today, the Bulgarian mountains are actually more stable demographically than the plains. Also, the economy of the mountainous regions is far from "a few sheep, tobacco and a gold mine": the Bulgarian mountains have a higher share of the processing industry than most European countries, including productions with high added value. There is no doubt that in some parts of Bulgaria there are many times more pensioners than students and almost all companies are closed because there are no people left to work in them. This book does not belittle the serious problems of regional development, but examines them objectively and comprehensively, looking for a way out of the negative population-economy spiral in mountainous regions. What are the factors explaining the demographic crisis in most mountain municipalities? Why is the mountain agricultural sector in decline and what should be done about it? What is the place of the extractive sector? How does manufacturing affect development? What are the most promising forms of mountain tourism? These and a number of other questions are carefully examined in this work, dedicated to the socio-economic past, present and future of the Bulgarian mountains.
