Themes of religious art in spite of its apparent canonical limitations are very multifarious. Still, sculpture has formed its own favorite compositions. One of them is the representation of Christ before crucifixion, the so-called "Midnight Savior". Related wooden statues appeared in Russian churches in the XVIIth century and by the XVIIIth century they had gained wide spread.
