The history of Polotsk is more than 1000 years old. This one of the oldest cities of the Eastern Slavs is located on the territory of modern Belarus on the banks of the Western Dvina River at its confluence with the Polota. The city arose at the intersection of trade routes between the West and the East. This determines its development and the presence of a large number of interesting sights in Polotsk. St. Sophia Cathedral - a majestic temple on the river bank is today a cultural, Orthodox, architectural and historical monument. International treaties were concluded here, foreign ambassadors were received, a library, archives and even a burial vault of princes were located here. Today it is one of the symbols of Polotsk and is included in the UNESCO heritage list.
