The book is centered on the question: What is music? The first of its two volumes examines the answers given to that question over the centuries. It looks back on the periods of antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era (until the 17th century); presents excerpts from written works highlighting significant ideas about music; reconstructs the general picture of the knowledge of music; and analyzes various aspects of the relationship between music and philosophy. That relationship is complex and ambivalent, and has long been bereft of the awareness that philosophy is the highest form of music, as Plato believed.
