“The Invitation to Execution” (1934) is the seventh Russian novel by Vladimir Nabokov. In some invented country a young man whose name is Cincinnat C. waits for his execution being imprisoned into a fortress. Visited by “miserable phantoms” of his guards and relatives Cincinnat feels more and more clearly all the theatricality and grotesque absurdity of the world where the director of the prison can turn into a chief warder and an executioner pretends to be a prisoner and demonstrates circus tricks. However, at the moment of execution the main character’s illusory world quickly disappears and he enters the highest, genuine reality.
