The informal sector is a major source of income and employment in all developing countries and particularly so in Africa. In low-income economies in Africa, the informal sector typically accounts for about half of aggregate output and some 90 per cent of employment. Although the informal sector is rural and urban, this book focuses on the urban informal sector, which is growing
particularly fast and accounts for a large share of total informal employment.
While the informal sector is receiving increasing attention in academic and policy realms, there is still much that remains unknown. This book sheds light on some important and previously understudied aspects of the urban informal sector, using case studies and surveys based on original data as well as interviews. It focuses mostly on francophone Africa, with particular attention
to Senegal, Benin and Burkina Faso in West Africa, and Cameroon and Gabon in Central Africa. However, the book also includes comparisons to informal sectors in other countries in Africa and other regions.
