Through a comparative analysis of the interrelations of various elements of culture in pre-Islamic (traditional) Kumyk society and the dynamics of these interrelations after the adoption of Islam, it is shown that the adoption of Islam did not exclude the basic religious-archaic components in the structure of the self-consciousness of the Kumyk ethnic group; they were preserved, albeit in a transformed, syncretic form.
