Mariana Ekimova-Melnishka is a translator, a journalist and a teacher at the New Bulgarian University. She is an author of numbers of travel notes with focus on places which preserves the memory of Bulgaria after the Liberation from Ottoman slavery. Doc. Dr. Alexandur Gerov is specialized in mathematics and informatics areas but his hobby is the photography. His favorite subject is the nature but he finds in the buildings the landscape of the city. The presented life stories of dozens of famous Bulgarians with their professional paths and dramas enrich the initial Mariana Ekimova-Melnishka’s intent to reveal only the destiny of the old houses. The personal visits of homes-monuments, the meetings with heirs or contemporaries of houses owners, the studies in libraries and museums – all of that built up the author’s idea just to show the unique houses as architectural models or as key buildings for the Bulgarian history. She “opened” the doors and made them “talk” – about the legends, the events and people who lived there. Almost 300 author’s photographs by Aleksandur Gerov enrich by wonderful way the descriptions of hundreds of houses, they reveal their beauty and preserve them in the memory of the cities as pictures of memories.
