The Monastery was founded in 1282 by the son of Alexander Nevsky. The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity which dominates the complex today was built in the XIXth century in the neo-classical style. Its simple but monumental forms are the best specimens of Russian architecture of the XVIth century. Its frescos (1662-1668) illustrating apocalypse scenes combine traditional painting with new methods, typical of masters of Kostroma. Photos and plans illustrate the descriptions.
