Before World War II, more than 79,000 Jews lived in Greece in 31 communities, which until then operated in almost all urban centers of the country. After the Holocaust, 87% of Greek Jews were exterminated and less than 5,000 people remained in the country, who are now members of the eight Jewish communities that survived. The book examines the reasons why the extermination of Greek Jews was eradicated from national memory and history. The attitude of the state towards them is investigated, as well as the various roles adopted by their fellow citizens during the Occupation, but also during the Liberation. Many of the myths of public history are debunked, which for decades claimed that all Christians helped the Jews as a whole and that, apart from the Nazis, they were the only ones to blame this unpunished crime was the victims themselves and their leaders. All the above are documented with the presentation of published and archival sources of history, oral history and memory. Some of these sources are commented in detail. Others, such as the correspondence of those in charge and the legislation of the Greek state, which confirm the exploitation and looting of Jewish property, are published as such in two appendices at the end of the book.
