The memory of the Holocaust cannot be limited to a formal probe into the not so distant past. Understanding its consequences requires not only knowing the fates, numbers, and names of those murdered. The consequences must also include how this historically relatively short period affected the lives of survivors and their descendants. How has the Jewish community changed? How many Jewish traditions have lost their bearers? And how does the majority society (not) perceive these losses? At the same time, the former horrors warn of a possible recurrence. After all, attempts to rehabilitate the regime and leading figures of the war-torn Slovak state are still a current problem in Slovak society.
