The publication, using the example of some clans of single-family homesteaders in Russia, traces the social, political and military processes associated with the economic development of the steppe regions of the Southern Urals. In the 18th - early 19th centuries, the descendants of city Cossacks, gunners, archers and dragoons from the southeastern regions of Russia moved to the Orenburg province. In a new place, they were enlisted in the ranks of the Orenburg Cossack army and continued military service, simultaneously increasing the labor glory of the region. Thanks to them, the Urals gained the status of the Stronghold of the Power.
The research is based on documents from the collections of a number of central and regional archives. When compiling genealogical lists, materials from folk censuses (revision tales), metric books of church parishes of settlements and villages of the Voronezh, Tambov, Samara and Tobolsk provinces, villages of the Orenburg Cossack army and cities of the Southern Urals were used. For individual settlements, it was possible to discover such valuable sources of information for genealogical research as confessional statements.
