The book attempts to tell the story of a 60-year-old motion picture by looking into Bulgarian and Russian archives. The film "The Heroes of Shipka" (1955) was co-produced by two countries: the Soviet Union and Bulgaria. It is the meeting point of two wars: the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, which is the main theme, and the Cold War, which lurks backstage. Two armies, the Russian Army and the Soviet Red Army, escape the limits of time, take on the main roles and at the end of the film proclaim themselves as "the two-time liberators" of Bulgaria. This is how the myth of "the two-time liberators" received its first feature-film expression within the strict stylistic framework of "socialist realism". Joseph Stalin's death in 1953 marked a turning point in the making of the film, splitting the process into two periods. This book looks into more than 10,000 sheets of archival material, much of which held deep secrets, classified orders and confidential instructions about the making and the distribution of the movie.
